FAQ

Should I encourage my teenager to see a therapist?

The Child Mind Institute recommends offering therapy as a resource rather than requiring it, since it can give teens a safe space to talk openly about feelings related to divorce. You might say something like, "I know this is a lot to deal with. Would you be open to talking with someone outside the family?" Letting your teenager choose their own therapist, when possible, increases the likelihood that they will engage with the process, and open communication at home and in counseling can support healthier coping. If you notice persistent behavioral changes, academic decline, persistent anxiety, or signs of depression, seeking support becomes more strongly recommended.
